Take a visual journey through the history of Norfolk and Western Railway and its deep connection to Roanoke. From its early days in 1882, when the railroad helped transform a small town into a thriving rail hub, to the golden age of steam railroading that earned Roanoke the nickname “Magic City,” this exhibition traces the powerful role the railroad played in shaping the region’s identity, economy, and landscape.

Norfolk & WesternThrough historic photographs, artifacts, and stories, visitors will explore the era when Roanoke became one of the most important railroad centers in the nation, highlighted by the railroad’s famed steam locomotive program and the bustling activity of the East End Shops. The exhibition also reflects on the railroad’s centennial celebration in 1982 and its merger with Southern Railway to form Norfolk Southern.

Although the company relocated its headquarters from Roanoke in 2015, its legacy continues to shape the city and the surrounding region. From the rail lines that still run through the valley to the communities built around the industry, the story of Norfolk & Western remains deeply rooted in Roanoke’s past and present.

The exhibit will be located in our Trackside Gallery, opening March 12, and will be on view until June.
