Norfolk & Western Architectural History TourWhen Norfolk & Western Railway arrived in Roanoke in 1882, it transformed a small mountain community into a thriving railroad city. Though the railroad itself is gone, the architectural framework it established still shapes the city’s landscape today.

Join architectural historian Kelly Robertson for a guided, one-mile walking tour exploring how the railroad influenced Roanoke’s built environment. Along the route, participants will learn how to “read” the city’s architecture by examining the buildings, materials, and details that reflect the economic and industrial forces that shaped their construction.

Through close observation and historical context, the tour reveals how Roanoke’s railroad-era architecture has adapted over time while continuing to define the character of downtown.
