Winter has a way of reminding us that, despite our best planning, some things remain out of our control. Due to the arrival of Winter Storm Fern, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the upcoming event in the Kegley Lecture Series.
This lecture series has always been about bringing people together — to listen closely, to ask meaningful questions, and to engage in conversations that matter. Canceling an event like this is never taken lightly. We know many in our community were looking forward to gathering, and we share in that disappointment.
We ecourage everyone to stay safe, stay warm, and take care of one another. We’ll share updates about future Kegley Lecture events as soon as plans are confirmed. Thank you for being part of this community — even when winter asks us to slow down.
Roanoke’s Early Boy Scout History: 1910-1920
Stephen Warren
Join us on Tuesday, January 27, as the Kegley Lecture Series returns with a fascinating look at the early history of scouting in Roanoke. During the first half of the 20th century, scouting played a vital role in shaping leadership, outdoor skills, and civic pride among local youth. This lecture will explore the origins of Roanoke’s scout council and highlight troop activities during its first decade.
The program will be presented by Stephen Warren, a past president of the Historical Society of Western Virginia and founder of the Blue Ridge Scouting History Project. Warren has written extensively on early Scouting in our region and has helped preserve this important chapter of community history through archival work, lectures, and exhibits.
