Jan. 28 talk on 1775 Fincastle Resolutions
Attorney Eric Helms Monday, whose family roots have been in Southern Virginia since the 1730s, will speak Jan. 28 on the “To Live and Die in Liberty –Fincastle Resolutions” at the first 2025 Kegley lecture.
In January 1775, the Fincastle Resolutions said for the first time that the American colonists were willing to fight for their liberty. The Resolutions were soon known all over Virginia, leading directly to Patrick Henry’s immortal “Liberty or Death” speech in March. By year’s end the Royal Governor had fled Virginia, never to return. The next year Virginia led the 13 colonies to declare independence and form the United States.
Monday attended the University of Virginia for both undergraduate and law school, working throughout at the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service, and living in one of Jefferson’s original Lawn rooms during his final undergraduate year. He is now General Counsel at the Roanoke Airport.
He is also general counsel for the Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and president of the Fincastle Resolutions SAR chapter in Roanoke. He is a member of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Commission for the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. The Historical Society, which operates the Roanoke History Museum, has been selected as the center of opening events for the anniversary.
The lecture will be held at 7 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in southwest Roanoke. Admission is $5/free for HSWV members.
